In Queenstown ging das Drama mit der Hostelsuche weiter. Wieder waren alle Unterkünfte und Mietwagen ausgebucht und wir mit den Nerven am Ende. Im letzen Moment wurde aber offenbar eine Reservierung storniert und so hatten wir wieder einmal Glück in letzter Sekunde und bekamen eine Unterkunft für eine Nacht. Am nächsten Morgen konnten wir nach stundenlanger Suche auch noch einen Mietwagen mit Dachzelt für die kommenden fünf Tage ergattern und somit konnte unser Roadtrip losgehen.
Wir wollten in den fünf Tagen so viel wie möglich sehen und entschieden uns als erstes zum Fjord Milford Sounds zu fahren. Wir erreichten das Areal am frühen Abend und campten direkt am Wasser. Am nächsten Morgen erkundeten wir die atemberaubende Gegend. Der perfekte Auftakt für unsere Tour.
Anschließen fuhren wir weiter nach Te Anau und wanderten für zwei Stunden auf dem Keppler Track. Der Weg führte uns durch einen mysteriösen Wald und endete an einem See. Gecampt haben wir wieder einmal in einer rechtlichen Grauzone an einem Aussichtspunkt in der Nähe von Te Anau.
Am nächsten Tag fuhren wir weiter nach Wanaka. Die kleine nette Stadt liegt idyliisch am Lake Wanaka. Nach ein wenig Recherche im Internet entschieden wir uns dafür, den Roys Peak Track in Angriff zu nehmen. Ein 8 Kilometer langer und steiler Pfad, welcher uns in ca. 3 Stunden alles an Kraft abverlangte. Doch als wir am Gipfel in 1600 Meter ankamen waren jegliche Strapazen vergessen. Die Aussicht war gigantisch und wirklich wirklich jeden Schweißtropfen wert.
Am nächsten Tag machten wir uns auf in Richtung Norden und erkundeten die sogenannten Blue Pools und den die Thunder Creek Falls. Die Blue Pools haben mir hierbei besonders gut gefallen. Kaum zu glauben, dass es ein derart blau-gefärbtes Wasser in der Natur zu sehen gibt. Abends fuhren wir weiter in Richtung Mount Cook und campten direkt am Lake Pukaki.
Der Mount Cook ist der höchste Berg Neuseelands. Aus zeitlichen Gründen mussten wir uns leider für einen kurzen Wanderweg entscheiden und so erkundeten wir nur den Lake Tasman am Fuße des Berges. Anschließend ging es dann erschöpft, aber überglücklich zurück nach Queenstown. Hier wartete ein, wie immer in letzter Sekunde freigewordenes, Hostel auf uns.
Fünf Tage voller spektakulär Eindrücke, die ich so schnell nicht vergessen werde. Ich kann nur jedem Besucher Neuseelands ans Herz legen, sich zumindest für ein paar Tage ein Auto zu mieten, um das Land auf eigene Faust zu erkunden. Das Gefühl der Flexibilität ist einfach unschlagbar und gerade die unzähligen spontanen Stopps und ewig langen Straßen, die zwischen den Bergen verlaufen sind anders einfach nicht zu erreichen. Die Eindrücke lassen sich wirklich nicht in Worte fassen. Man muss es selber erlebt haben.
